This is the new name of the previously called proctology section. The decision for the creation of the initial proctology section was taken by the General Assembly during the "Gastroenterological Days" held in Limassol, Cyprus on June 18, 1988.
The idea for its formation was conceived after the scientific meeting of the Hellenic- French Days of Proctology that took place in Athens at that time. Pioneers of the HSG proctologic section formation were: Basilis Georgoulis, Konstantinos Nikolaidis, Ilias Fokas, John Christodoulopoulos, Panagiotis Poungouras and Nikolaos Papanikolaou.
In 2012 it was renamed colorectal section.
